ibm smarter cities
The IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a global competition and the winners become part of the global IBM Smarter Cities partnership. Being part of the Smarter Cities network gives access to cutting edge expertise and resources. The successful city also wins mentoring from top IBM executives.
The City of Townsville was keen to win a place and use the partnership to build on the city’s renowned sustainability initiatives.
I worked with the Executive Manager to put the initial proposal together. We conceived of a project that would bring energy conservation, renewable energy, behaviour change, data and storytelling together. I contributed the initial ideas, the framework and the storytelling components. Feedback from IBM stated that this was one of the factors that made the application stand out.
Townsville won and joined the IBM Smarter City – the only city in the Oceania region to do so that year. Key IBM staff worked with city leaders and produced a roadmap towards a more sustainable future. The initiative started a successful, innovative partnership that continues to this day.
